The Isla Internship Program offers a service learning program that:

  • provides meaningful work side-by-side with local people on worthy community projects and the chance to learn about and apply appropriate sustainable development principles.
  • gives you the opportunity to experience another culture and language;
  • provides the possibility to fulfill academic requirements via college credit for independent study abroad, an internship, field research, or a practicum;
  • provides professional experience related to one’s major, career interests and aspirations.
  • opens doors to opportunities for future work in international development with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and non-profits, governmental agencies, and other possibilities in international affairs, education, business, the private sector, and so on.
  • If you have limited time, yet you would still like to have the opportunity to participate in a meaningful service learning experience, then Isla’s Short Term Volunteer program may be more suitable for you.  All Isla participants receive training in sustainable community development which will give you the skills to observe, participate in, and contribute to a worthy community project.   You will also have a wonderful opportunity to experience another culture and language.

    Gap Year Students

    What is a gap year student? Your "gap year" is the year between high school and college or the year between the end of undergraduate studies and before you start a career.  The gap year is an ideal time to experience either an Isla Short Term Volunteer or Internship Program.   Your Isla experience will give you the opportunity to work side-by-side with local people on meaningful and worthy endeavors that affect and have impact on the local community.  It is also an ideal way to experience another culture and language and gain valuable international work experience.

    The Isla Internship Program is ideal for the gapper who would like to spend a longer period of time on an international service learning experience that will contribute towards a career goal, develop greater knowledge in an area of interest or simply provide insight into whether or not one would like to pursue a career in international development.  You may also wish to have training and firsthand experience in sustainable development and want to learn more about international development issues related to the environment, health, education, or social services before embarking on further studies or a career in international development.

    If you're thinking about volunteering during your gap year, the Isla Short Term Volunteer program is suitable for the gapper who is taking a year off to embark on a meaningful volunteer work experience as part of a year of independent travel before further studies or the start of a new career.  The short term volunteer program also provides a glimpse into the field of international development.
