Why Isla?
International Service Learning Alliance (Isla) offers service learning opportunities abroad for individuals to work side by side with community members who are trying to solve global problems at the local level. These partnerships provide a framework for people from different cultures and life experiences to learn from one another, discover their commonality and create a synergy that catalyzes progress.
Isla volunteers and interns work with community initiated projects focused on sustainable development. Isla programs are designed to assist communities with their worthy endeavors, provide volunteers with practical education in sustainable community development, and promote cross-cultural understanding.
Isla is a non-profit organization with no religious or political affiliations.
What is Service Learning?
“Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” (www.servicelearning.org)
Each Isla service learning experience includes a serving and a learning component:
The service experience centers on a community based project that has been identified by Isla in coordination with a host organization and the participant as an endeavor that is a benefit to the community and for the experiential education it provides the participant.
The learning experience is derived from the Isla training and the practical hands-on experiences of the service project.
Isla is dedicated to providing a rich, rewarding and life changing experience for each participant and meaningful assistance to partner host organizations.
