Climate Change Mitigation Intern (CCMI)

The Climate Change Mitigation Intern (CCMI), under the supervision of the Bio Gardens' Programme Coordinator, will provide strategic and technical support to Bio Gardens in engaging communities to climate change. The intern will work in Kirembe parish, Muhokya Sub County, Kasese district. The basic responsibilities of this position will include designing and planning strategies to engage the community of Kirembe parish in climate change mitigation activities that are economic focused and will also develop strategies for natural resource management with emphasis on cultural values (trees for clans, trees with special natural forces that are relevant to climate change, trees for land boundaries, tree planting and gender and prohibited trees in the society.
The climate change mitigation project is aimed at involving indigenous people in addressing issues of climate change through cultural values and conservation for economic purposes. In general, the Climate change mitigation Intern position is structured in a way that the intern will provide support in involving a wider range of players in addressing climate issues right from the local communities.
Unlike similar internships, this work focuses on providing a high level of intensive support to a group of professional development workers and less on the cultural, language and community immersion components associated with many “voluntourism” internships. This internship is intended to mirror the expectations and responsibilities of a focused front-line entry level development position.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
A. Community engagement in climate change mitigation activities (approx. 80% of the time)
B. Other Duties and Activities (not to exceed 20% of the time)
Expected Outcomes:
Supervision and Guidance
The CCMI functions under the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator and in cooperation with other staff and volunteers. CCMI is expected to carry out most job functions independently with guidance and training provided by the program staff.

Other:
The intern will work for 7 hours per day from Monday – Friday. The intern may be required to work for extra hours to achieve expected target and the Programme Coordinator will have a prior discussion with him/her.
Transport means is a challenge for Bio Gardens so the intern will be walking from the host home to the office and will use public transport to carry out community activities.

- Work with Bio Gardens to design and plan strategies to engage the community of Kirembe parish in climate change mitigation activities that are economic focused
- Research on the level of influence for cultural values and people's traditions towards climate change mitigation in the Rwenzori region
- Develop strategies for natural resource management with emphasis on cultural values, beliefs and traditions
- Develop a climate change mitigation project needs assessment for Bio Gardens
- Conduct climate change mitigation training for the relevant Bio Gardens' staff and management
B. Other Duties and Activities (not to exceed 20% of the time)
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Programme Coordinator and or management of Bio Gardens
- Make project reports to relevant stakeholders
- Create a strong and fruitful linkage between Bio Gardens/Uganda and the people of US through sharing development related issues
Expected Outcomes:
- Climate change mitigation project design for Bio Gardens
- Needs assessment report on climate change mitigation for Bio Gardens
- One day training for Bio Gardens staff and management in climate change mitigation
- Research report on the level of influence for cultural values and people's traditions towards climate change mitigation in the Rwenzori
- Two climate change mitigation planning meetings with local leaders of Muhokya sub county and Kasese Municipal council as a sharing and entry point for the project

Desired Qualifications:
- Education: Pursuing or achieved a university degree in Environmental studies or related field
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and Uganda's culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level relationship with NGO officials and rural families in the Rwenzori, demonstrated experience and skills in supporting of training or educational events and knowledge.
