The Environmental Initiatives Intern (EII), under the supervision of the Kazigha Youth Foundation for Rural Development Executive Director, will provide strategic support to organizations in designing environmental projects and campaigns.  The basic responsibilities of this position will include developing and supporting environmental trainings and providing direct consultation and support for
the design of environmental projects and campaigns. In general, the EII position is structured so that the intern provides support focused on environmental initiatives and issues surrounding community driven development work.

In general, the EII position is structured so that the intern provides support for a spectrum of grant projects associated with our team’s Community Driven Development work. Unlike similar internships, this work focuses on providing a high level of intensive support to a group of professional development workers and less on the cultural, language and community immersion components
associated with many “voluntourism” internships. This internship is intended to mirror the expectations and responsibilities of an entry level development position.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

A.  Environmental and Related Program Development (approx. 40% of the time)
  • Support the host organization to develop environmental campaigns. This will include conducting a survey of the LPO to identify current and potential campaign focuses and methodology needs. A possible campaign could be the engagement of communities in mitigating climate change.
  • Analyze and prepare a report on the environmental survey that provides possible approaches and methods for addressing specific opportunities.
  • Design training materials and conduct a workshop focusing on how the host organization can best develop environmental campaigns involving varying stakeholders.  Possible topics include creative ways to inspire communities to action; campaigning; communication protocols and best practices; message crafting; participatory facilitation methods, etc.
  • Work with LPO to implement environmental campaigns. Follow-up on their progress; carry out field visits to provide support and further assessment on LPO implementation strengths and additional capacity-building needs; provide one-on-one consultation as necessary.

B.  Communication & Outreach (approx. 50% of the time)
  • Work directly with LPO staff in sharing their environmental campaigns to a broader audience, at both the national and international level.
  • Conduct trainings to relevant LPO staff in categorizing and identifying information pertinent for outreach and marketing efforts, and in publicizing the information through appropriate medium.  Possible areas could include blog creation, Facebook page, website development, or other online or social media presence, with the objective of expanding the LPO’s environmental campaigns beyond the community level to include and engage a broader audience.

C.  Other Duties and Activities (not to exceed 10% of the time)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the LPO Executive Director
  • Provide relevant insight and ideas to the staff and volunteers on how technology and communications systems can be best integrated within the organization.

Expected Outcomes:
  • Key LPO staff and volunteers will have received at least one day of campaign development and 5 hours of communications & outreach training.
  • Intern will provide a minimum of two workshops, one on environmental campaign development and another on communications & outreach best practices and implementation skills.
  • Intern will provide one-on-one support to further the LPO’s cause.
  • For all workshops conducted, intern will design and compile a training curriculum and manual, for future sustainability.

Supervision and Guidance

The EII functions under the direct supervision of the LPO Executive Director and in coordination and cooperation with the other staff and volunteers. EII is expected to carry out most job functions independently with guidance and training provided by the program staff.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Education: Pursuing or achieved a university degree in Environmental studies or related field
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and the host-country’s culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level relationship with NGO officials and host families, demonstrated experience and skills in supporting of training or educational events and knowledge.
