HIV/AIDS Awareness Intern

The HIV/AIDS Awareness Intern, under the supervision of the Programe Coordinator, RubaboCommunity Initiative to Promote Health (RUCOHE) will provide strategic and technical support to RUCOHE in planning and designing an Economic focused conservation project.
In general, this position is structured so that the intern provides support focused on environmental initiatives and issues surrounding our team’s Community Driven Development work. Unlike similar internships, this work focuses on providing a high level of intensive support to a group of professional development workers and less on the cultural, language and community immersion components associated with many “voluntourism” internships. This internship is intended to mirror the expectations and responsibilities of an entry level development position. The position works under the supervision of the Program Director in Kasese.
The HIV and AIDS Awareness Intern (HAAI), under the supervision of Rubabo Community Initiative to Promote Health (RUCOHE) Executive Director, will provide new innovative strategies that will support RUCOHE in planning and designing HIV and AIDS sensitization initiatives in Buyanja Sub County in Rukungiri District. The strategies will be aiming at building the capacity of RUCOHE staff and the entire community to effectively respond to the HIV and AIDS scourge.
The HIV and AIDS Awareness Intern will spend 70% of his/her time in the field providing support to RUCOHE to promote awareness on HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment care and support. The awareness initiatives will target the youth (aged 15 -25) as direct beneficiaries. The work schedule for the position is Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Some activities can also be arranged to happen on weekends depending on the community and intern’s commitment and flexibility.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Develop and implement an HIV and AIDS sensitization strategy (approx. 80% of the time)
B. Other duties and activities ( not to exceed 10% of the time)

Supervision and Guidance:
The HIV and AIDS Awareness Intern (HAAI) will functions under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and in coordination with other organization staff and volunteers. HAAI is expected to carry out 60% of the job functions independently with guidance and trainings provided by the Executive Director
Desired Qualifications:
Education: Pursuing or achieved a university degree in International Development or related field
Language Proficiency: Fluency in spoken and written English.
Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and Uganda's culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level relationship with NGO officials and rural families in Rukungiri, demonstrated a commitment and service for humanity to serve the rural vulnerable people more especially the youth and children affected by HIV and AIDS, capacity in public speaking, motivation and training.
Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work in rural areas with poor families and the illiterate people, organizational, controlling skills, motivational and commitment to work both independently and dependently coupled with excellence interpersonal skills and active in learning the local language (Lukyinga)

The intern will work seven hours per day from Monday to Friday. The intern may be required to work extra hours purposely to achieve the agreed targets and the Executive Director shall have a discussion in advance with the intern.
The transport means is a challenge for RUCOHE so the intern is expected to walk from the host home to RUCOHE office and a public means of transport shall be used when conducting community activities away from office location.

- Support RCOHE staff and volunteers to conduct a baseline survey on HIV prevention knowledge in Buyanja Sub County
- Compile the baseline report on HIV prevention knowledge
- Support in disseminating the baseline report to the relevant stakeholders
- Support RUCOHE staff and volunteers to develop new innovative strategies on HIV and AIDS awareness raising approaches in Buyanja
- Train RUCOHE staff and volunteers on the best practices of conducting and facilitating community dialogue meeting on HIV and AIDS issues
- Develop brief information education communication materials to support in sensitizing the communities on HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support
- Mobilize and conduct three community dialogue meetings and five community sensitization on HIV and AIDS and HCT outreaches
- Support RUCOHE staff to design an organization website aiming at sharing the organization work with the outside world
B. Other duties and activities ( not to exceed 10% of the time)
- Respond to other organizational related activities assigned by the executive director or other program staff
- Provide support to RUCOHE in basic fundraising efforts and grant proposal writing
- Build the capacity of RUCOHE staff and volunteers on report writing and best practices focused on communicating to donors and potential strategic partners
- Train and mentor RUCODE staff and volunteers on success stories development that they will be sharing on their website
Expected Outcomes:
- A baseline survey conducted on HIV and AIDS related knowledge and the report
- documented and disseminated to relevant stakeholders
- Workable strategies designed to support RUCOHE in promoting awareness on HIV and AIDS
- RUCOHE staff and volunteers empowered on how to conduct and facilitate community dialogue meetings focused on HIV and AIDS
- Increased awareness on HIV and AIDS in Buyanja Sub County
