HIV/AIDS Intern

The HIV/AIDS Prevention Advisor Intern, under the supervision of the Director of YAPI, will provide strategic support to the partner organization. The basic responsibilities of the position generally include developing and supporting the capacity building of YAPI. Additionally, the intern will train YAPI staff, board members and the volunteers about prevention measures and what approach can be used to best sensitize the community especially the under 25 aged youth.
In general, the HIV/AIDS Advisor position is structured so that the intern provides guidance with implementing a strategic plan and training for staff and beneficiaries. Unlike similar internships, this work focuses on providing a high level of intensive support to a group of professional development workers and less on the cultural, language and community immersion components associated with many “voluntourism” internships. This internship is intended to mirror the expectations and responsibilities of an entry level development position. The position works under the supervision of the partner organization Director The intern will function under the direct supervision of the YAPI Program Coordinator with indirect oversight and supervision from the Board Chairperson at YAPI and FCDE Program Director with oversight by the Executive Director, Jenny Sowry.
Young and Powerful Initiative (YAPI) was founded in 2000 as a pioneer organization in areas of HIV/AIDS in Kasese District. Our primary focus is to fight HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and improve the reproductive health of both in and out of school youth below the age of 24. It is an Anglican Church founded nonprofit organization that maintains neutrality with regard to religion, political, tribal, racial, and gender inclinations while delivering services. YAPI's vision is for a community with social and economically empowered and productive youth of ages 24 and under. Mission: To improve the health and livelihoods of youth, under the age of 24, through education, protection of rights, economic empowerment, family health, guidance and counseling services. Goal: To improve the quality of life for the youth in Kasese district and its surrounding area. Through raising awareness and preventing the spread of the STDs and AIDS/HIV diseases through intervention measures youth and thrive in their communities. Improving the sexual and reproductive health for the beneficiaries by 2018 is YAPI’s goal.
The HIV/AIDS intern will work closely with the YAPI Coordinator to build the capacity of YAPI staff, volunteers and board members in areas of HIV/AIDs awareness. In addition to training staff, volunteers, and board members, the intern will help implement a campaign in the community to increase HIV/AIDS awareness. The intern will create informative communication materials to be disseminated amongst community members to inform them of HIV/AIDs testing, treatment, and the various services available. The intern will also help establish documents which outline a strategic plan for YAPI’s HIV program, including best practices and approaches to sensitizing the community, with special attention given to the youth.
The intern will also work closely with YAPI staff to help design a resource mobilization strategy for the HIV/AIDS intervention program to ensure funds are available to roll out the awareness campaign.

The intern will be living with a host family in the community and is expected to be considerate of cultural differences
The intern will be living in a home but will have their own room, they will be expected to share bathrooms and living space with their families, they will be expected to respect their host family rules, etc.

- Work closely with YAPI staff in designing a resource mobilization strategy for HIV/AIDS interventions with the community.
- Creating informative communications materials to help sensitize the community on HIV/AIDS and how to demand care and support services.
- Training staff on data management for HIV/AIDS Clients.
- Developing an HIV/AIDS workplace policy for YAPI
- Additionally, the intern may be asked to help on day-to-day tasks and participate in other areas of YAPI’s programs
- Build the capacity of YAPI Staff on how to conduct and facilitate community meetings about HIV/AIDS.
Desired Qualifications:
- Education: Pursuing a university degree in social sciences or humanities or recently graduated from university
- Knowledge: Vested interest in HIV/AIDS and health related programs. Critical thinker and quick learner, able to work despite resource limitations and challenges
- Skills and Abilities: Some background in working with non-profits or in HIV/AIDS would be helpful but is not required. Flexible and adaptable, able to cope with lack of power, running water, or internet from time-to-time
