Information Management & Communication Intern
Organization: Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR)

The Information Management and Communication Intern (IMCI), under the direct supervision of OBR’s Minister of Information and Communication will provide strategic support to enable the Rwenzururu Kingdom to create a system of recording, organizing, communicating, and disseminating all essential information related to OBR’s programmatic activities, outreach work, social events and publicity efforts. These efforts are part of OBR’s mission to increase the efficacy of community health, education, women’s empowerment, social justice, and HIV/AIDS sensitization and services as well as relevant news and information provided to enhance the lives of the 8 million people who live within the Rwenzururu Kingdom.

The IMCI intern will spend the majority of the time in-office with periodic travel to the field.  Typical work schedule for this position is Monday - Friday from 8am-5pm, with occasional site visits or community visits conducted over the weekend. OBR’s office in Kasese currently has one working computer but without Internet access.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

A. Information Management (approx. 30% of the time)
  • In collaboration with OBR staff/volunteers, carry out an Information Management & Communication needs assessment to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.
  • Analyze and prepare a report on the IM&C needs, including possible approaches and methods for addressing specific opportunities.  Work directly with OBR staff/volunteers in the Ministry of Information and Communication to address specific issues raised in the assessment results.
  • Build Ministers, staff and volunteers capacity in collecting, documenting and organizing information to optimize information flow and usage. A potential project may be the development of a system to update the public regularly on relevant breaking news in the area. Other projects may focus around the creation of a communication strategy around Rwenzuruu cultural events to preserve the tribe’s history, assisting in adding a beginner's Lukonzo-English language dictionary to the website, or briefs on the kingdom’s various community projects.

B. Information Communication Technology (approx. 30% of the time)
  • Build staff and volunteers capacity on using digital and video cameras, including the storing, processing and utilizing of its digital files. Documentation will be used to update records on programs, to insure accuracy of information and to share out OBR’s work with wider community and financial sponsors.
  • Train OBR in updating (and upgrading, if possible) the organization’s website to increase organizational visibility and information dissemination. 
  • Build staff and volunteers capacity on uploading pictures, voice messages, success stories and reports to the organization’s website.
  • Identify other areas of support needed in ICT capacity-building and with guidance from the supervisor, design and conduct capactiy-building sessions or provide additional one-on-one support.
  • Design a training curriculum and strategy to ensure adequate documentation of new skills learned and to ensure future internal skills transfer capabilities.

C.     Administrative Support (no more than 20% of the time)
  • All internships involve providing ongoing support to various organizational initiatives, including but not limited to assisting with program documentation, filing, taking meeting minutes, and other routine clerical functions.  As an intern for the organization, it is expected that you will provide occasional support of this type as needed, along with other duties and activities identified by your direct supervisor.

Expected Outcomes:                                                                                                              
  • The OBR Technical staff will have written standards for professional communications.
  • The OBR Technical staff will have received at least 4 hours of communications training. 
  • A plan detailing a proposed MIS system will be proposed to appropriate OBR ministers.

Supervision and Guidance
  • The IMC intern functions under the direct supervision of the Minister of Information and in coordination and cooperation with the Office of the Prime Minister, NGO Coordinator and other staff. IMC intern is expected to carry out most job functions independently. In addition to the direct supervisor, the IMC will be assigned a counterpart who will serve as an additional point of resource and reference for the IMC.

Desired Qualifications
  • Education:Pursuing or achieved a university degree in Journalism, International Development, International/Regional Studies or related field. 
  • Prior Experience: Previous experience working, volunteering or traveling abroad, especially in the Global South and/or with rural communities, in addition to comparable experience or education within a related field.
  • Language Proficiency: Spoken and written fluency in English.
  • Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and the host-country’s culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level contacts with NGO officials and host families; and demonstrated experience and skills in supporting of training or educational events.  
  • Skills and Abilities:Basic website knowledge and skills, media technology (sound and visual), and organizational development skills. Ability to take initiative, work under minimal guidance both in office and field settings.  Organizational and administrative skills.  Excellent computer skills in word-processing and database management.  Motivation and commitment to work effectively as part of an inter-cultural team.  Excellent interpersonal skills.  

Other
  • It is suggested that the intern bring his/her own laptop as OBR will not be able to provide the intern with one.
