Resource Mobilization & Financial Planning Intern

The Resource Mobilization & Financial Planning Intern (RMFP), under direct supervision of New Eden’s Programs Manager, will provide strategic support to enable New Eden to increase resources and partnerships in the community. In addition, the FP intern will support the designing, documentation, and implementation of a 5-year financial sustainability plan. The goal of the financial sustainability plan is to ensure both long- and short-term financial solvency and the growth and strengthening of smaller programs.
Work done by the RMFP intern will increase New Eden’s ability to provide quality services beyond the 45,000 community members already being served. Successful completion of the internship will help invigorate New Eden’s agriculture, conservation, education, and health projects. In particular, the intern will have the opportunity to strengthen the following programs: HIV Living Positively, which forms home-to-home support groups; Gender Advocacy, educating communities about domestic violence prevention and women in decision making; Sustainable Agriculture, encouraging communities to practice soil conservation; and Environmental Conservation, where the local community is sensitized to natural resource management of the river as their main water source.
The RMFP intern will spend the majority of the time in-office with periodic travel to the field. Typical work schedule for this position is Monday – Friday from 9:00am-4:30pm, with occasional site visits or community meetings conducted over the weekend. New Eden’s office has 6 computers, one of which has access to the Internet.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
A. Financial Sustainability Plan Development (approx. 40% of the time)
- Carry out a thorough and detailed analysis to understand the current NE 2011-2013 strategic plan and financial plan, including observations, surveys, document/financial reviews, field visits and interviews to better understand New Eden’s SWOT, clients, current and potential projects and donors.
- Analyze, present, and prepare a report on the survey results, including possible approaches and methods for addressing specific opportunities. Work directly with NE staff to address specific issues raised in the survey results.
- Facilitate dialogues to enable staff buy-in and contribution in re-designing NE’s financial sustainability plan.
- In collaboration with NE staff, develop a comprehensive 5-year financial sustainability plan, including short- and long-term actions and an expectant outcome.
- Build management staff capacity in revising and updating the financial sustainability plan per implementation outcomes and progress.
B. Resource Mobilization Development (approx. 30% of the time)
- Analyze NE’s current Resource Mobilization capacity and together with key NE staff, identify and prioritize areas of intervention.
- Based on results from the above analysis, and in collaboration with NE staff, design and execute resource mobilization plans. Possible projects here may be to design and host a fundraising event, to establish a donor proposal database to keep track of grants submitted, or to improve on a specific area of grant writing.
- Assist NE to develop its international relations and outreach effort, specifically addressing how strengthened international relations could contribute to NE’s resource mobilization efforts.
- Provide a written set of recommendations and/or next steps for subsequent interns to give continuity to projects or overall program development.
C. Training (approx. 20% of the time)
- Build staff and volunteers capacity on various areas related to ensuring organizational financial sustainability, including but not limited to resource mobilization and financial planning. Sample trainings may include the designing of a fundraising event, researching and identifying potential donors, and mastering the basics of budgeting.
- For all trainings conducted, formulate a training curriculum and strategy to ensure adequate documentation of new skills learned and to ensure future internal skills transfer capabilities.
D. Administrative Support (no more than 10% of the time)
- All internships involve providing ongoing support to various organizational initiatives, including but not limited to assisting with program documentation, filing, taking meeting minutes, and other routine clerical functions. As an intern for the organization, it is expected that you will provide occasional support of this type as needed, along with other duties and activities identified by your direct supervisor.
Expected Outcomes:
- New Eden Christian Foundation will have a well thought out 5-year financial sustainability plan to ensure continuation of current and future projects; key staff will possess a sense of ownership over the plan and have the ability to implement it.
- Key staff, especially those in the upper management, will have a basic understanding of the various components of the financial sustainability plan and the ability to revise contents of the plan in the future, as needed.
- The entire New Eden staff will have received at least 4 hours of resource mobilization training.
Supervision and Guidance
- The RMFP intern functions under the direct supervision of the Programs Manager and in coordination and cooperation with the Program Team. The FP intern is expected to carry out most job functions independently and take a significant role in initiating the processes necessary to complete the tasks. In addition to the direct supervisor, the FP will be assigned a counterpart whom will serve as an additional point of resource and reference for the FP.
Desired Qualifications
- Education: Pursuing or achieved a university degree in International Development, Public Administration, International Business, International/Regional Studies or related field.
- Prior Experience: Previous experience working, volunteering or traveling abroad, especially in the Global South and/or with rural communities, in addition to comparable experience or education within a related field.
- Language Proficiency: Spoken and written fluency in English.
- Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and the host-country’s culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level contacts with NGO officials and host families; demonstrated experience and skills in supporting of training or educational events; and demonstrated experience and skills in financial management and basic understanding of resource mobilization.
- Skills and Abilities: Ability to take initiative, work under minimal guidance, and in both office and field settings. Organizational and administrative skills. Excellent computer skills in word-processing and database management. Motivation and commitment to work effectively as part of an inter-cultural team. Excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment under normal as well as complex and often stressful conditions.
