Advocacy Strategy Formulation Intern

The Advocacy Strategy Formulation (ASF) Intern, under the direct supervision of Karambi Group of People with Disabilities (KAGPWD) Executive Director will provide guidance to enable the organization develop an Advocacy Strategy. This effort is part of the organization’s wide initiative intended to advocate for and promoting the rights of PWDs.
The ASF Intern will spend majority of the time at the office taking staff and members through the process of developing the strategy and doing some documentation work. The intern is expected to go to the field occasionally to interact with other community members and engage them in the process as well. Typical work schedule for this position is Monday – Friday from 9.00am-4.00pm.
People with Disabilities (PWDs) in Kasese District have remained politically, physically, socially and economically disadvantaged. They do not have equal access to public services and are constrained from accessing the economic opportunities which could enable them to improve their livelihoods; moreover this population cannot be neglected because the PWDs are 10% out of the general population in Kasese district (Kasese District Union for People with Disabilities (KADUPEDI) annual report 2012).
Karambi Group of People with Disabilities targets the people with disabilities (PWDs) and supports them to become economically empowered through vocational skills training (tailoring, knitting, computer, joinery and carpentry). The PDWs are supported to access treatment, sensitized on HIV/AIDS and their rights and have engaged in environmental protection camapigns. After training, some of the PDWs have established small businesses and are earning some income. Some are dealing in businesses at the border of Uganda and Congo after gaining skills in business planning and management. Despite the above, a lot is required to have the rights of PWDs realized and KAGPWD is planning to develop an advocacy strategy to guide the implementation of a campaign on the rights of PWDs.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Partner Training (approx. 30% of the time).
B. Support the process of developing the advocacy strategy: (approximately 60% of the time)
C: Administrative Support (no more than 10% of the time)

- Develop a tool to assess the LPO’s level of knowledge and understanding of advocacy and the capacity to carry out advocacy campaign
- Assess the LPO’s level of knowledge and understanding of advocacy and the capacity to carry out advocacy campaign
- Develop a report on the assessment results with recommendations on the key issues to emphasis on during the training
- Develop advocacy training curriculum/manual basing on the assessment results
- Deliver training meant to build the LPO’s skills and capacity in formulating advocacy strategy and carrying out advocacy campaign.
B. Support the process of developing the advocacy strategy: (approximately 60% of the time)
- Support the LPO through the process of identifying PDWs advocacy issues and prioritizing them
- Support the LPO to identify allies, risks and opportunities, resources required to do advocacy and identify the decision makers/or duty bearers whom the issue/s will be addressed to.
- Support the LPO to define strategies, advocacy outcomes and indicators to monitor
- Support the LPO to create an advocacy action plan
- Document the advocacy strategy
C: Administrative Support (no more than 10% of the time)
- All internships involve providing ongoing support to various organizational initiatives, including but not limited to assisting with information management, documentation, participating in meetings and other outreach programs. As an intern for the organization, it is expected that you will provide occasional support of this type as needed, along with other duties and activities identified by your direct supervisor.
Expected Outcomes:
- Advocacy training curriculum/manual
- The entire staff, volunteers and members of the organization will have received at least two days of training in advocacy.

Supervision and Guidance
- The ASF intern is expected to carry out most of the job functions under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and in coordination and cooperation with the organization’s team. In addition to the direct supervisor, the intern will be assigned a counterpart who will serve as an additional point of resource and reference.
Desired Qualifications
- Education: Pursuing or achieved a university degree in Human Rights or a related field
- Prior Experience: Previous experience working, volunteering or traveling abroad, especially in the Global South and/or with rural communities, in addition to comparable experience or education within a related field.
- Language Proficiency: Spoken and written fluency in English.
- Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and the host-country’s culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level contacts with NGO officials and host families; and demonstrated experience and skills in supporting of training or educational events.
- Skills and Abilities: Community development skills, Human Rights advocacy, ability to take initiative, work under minimal guidance both in office and field settings, excellent computer skills in word-processing and database management, motivation and commitment to work effectively as part of an inter-cultural team and excellent interpersonal skills.
Other
- The organization has only one computer and the intern will be required to come with or her own laptop.
- KAGPWD does not have own means of transport. They use hired motorcycles or walk for a few miles to reach their fields.
