Agriculture Marketing Intern

The Agricultural Marketing Intern, under the supervision of the Chairperson of the organization, will provide strategic support to the farmers’ groups in Munkunyu Sub County. The major responsibilities of the position include developing and supporting agricultural produce marketing trainings, supporting farmers’ groups in developing collective marketing strategies, providing direct consultancy on the crops grown and conducting market research.
Munkunyu Joint Microfinance works with farmers groups in Munkunyu sub county and supports farmers to access agricultural loans from the microfinance in cash and in form of seeds for planting and agricultural inputs. The farmers are being introduced to agronomic systems of farming which are aimed at increasing the quantity of crops they harvest per season. However, the farmers need to be supported in developing marketing skills so that they can access better prices for their produce thus increasing their incomes.
The Agricultural Marketing intern will work with the volunteers of Munkunyu at their offices in Munkunyu trading Centre and he/she will also spend some time in the field working with the farmers trying to understand how they market their produce. The intern will work at least 4 days in a week from 9:00am till 5:00pm, the day off will enable the intern to be able to integrate or learn more about the community outside his work related contact or operations.

- Carry out an assessment of the farmer groups to understand what crops they grow and how they are marketing and storing the produce currently.
- Analyze the assessment findings and prepare a report on how the farmers can strategically market their agricultural produce and increase their income. Work directly with Munkunyu Joint volunteers to address specific issues raised in the survey results.
- Working with Munkunyu Joint microfinance volunteers develop a simple training manual on marketing & improved storage of Agricultural produce.
- Conduct basic marketing training sessions with the farmer groups.
- Work with Munkunyu volunteers to develop a 5 years strategic marketing plan
Outreach and Marketing (approx. 10% of the time)
- Assist support in understanding the concept of agricultural marketing and networking both locally and internationally.
- Develop a plan for implementing and reviewing the marketing strategy.
Administrative Support (no more than 20% of the time)
- All internships involve providing ongoing support to host organizational initiatives, including but not limited to assisting with program documentation, filing, taking meeting minutes, and other routine clerical functions. As an intern for the organization, it is expected that he/she will provide occasional support of this type as needed, along with other duties and activities identified by the direct supervisor.
Program, Monitoring and Evaluation (approximately 10% of the time)
- Support in developing an M&E plan for the Marketing strategy and tools for collecting the data.
Expected outcomes
- Munkunyu Joint micro finance will develop a clear agriculture produce marketing strategy for the farmers and a well-defined implementation plan.
- The volunteers will have a clear understanding of how to store and market agricultural produce in order to access better markets.
- The intern will function under the direct supervision of the Microfinance chairperson and the management team. She/he is expected to carry out most job functions independently with guidance and support of the volunteers.
Desired Qualifications
- Education: Pursuing or achieved a university degree in Agriculture Economics or related field.
- Prior Experience: Previous experience working or volunteering in rural communities.
- Language Proficiency: Spoken and written fluency in English.
- Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and the host-country’s culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level relationship with NGO officials and host families, demonstrated experience and skills in supporting of training or educational events and knowledge of fair trade certification process.
- Skills and Abilities: Ability to effectively work and integrated with rural communities, organizational and administrative skills, excellent computer skills in word-processing and database management. Motivation and commitment to work effectively as part of an inter-cultural team, excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment
Other
- It is suggested that the intern bring his/her own laptop as Munkunyu Joint Micro finance will not be able to provide the intern with a computer.
- Transport means is a challenge for the organization so the intern may have to use a hired motorcycle or walk some distance from the office to the farmers’ fields or where the farmers groups meets from.
