The Nutrition Advisor Intern, under the supervision of the Executive Director will provide skills to the organization members on processing complimentary nutritional foods locally. She/he will also sensitize the members on the different food values and which foods these values are derived. After gaining the skills, the organization members will continue to produce processed complimentary nutritional foods which will be provided to children and pregnant mothers to prevent malnutrition and to improve their health. The Nutrition Advisor Intern will teach the members on the type of foods that can be mixed with others, the quantities of each type of food to be mixed, the local technologies that can be used to mix the foods and the ways of preserving and packing the processed foods.
Rwenzori Organization for Children Living under Difficult Circumstances is Non-Governmental Organization which supports children living under difficult circumstances in the rural areas of Kasese district supporting them to access health care, scholastic materials, life skills, counseling, guidance, information on HIV/AIDS and nutrition. These activities also involve care givers.
Major duties and responsibilities
A. Providing skills on processing complimentary nutritional foods locally (Approx. 80% of the time)
B. Community Outreach (approx. 10% of the time)
C. Administrative Support (no more than 10% of the time)

Major duties and responsibilities
A. Providing skills on processing complimentary nutritional foods locally (Approx. 80% of the time)
- Conduct an assessment on the nutritional status of the children in Kyondo sub-county
- Identify the locally available nutritious foods in Kyondo Sub-county
- Facilitate meetings to sensitize the members on the different food values and the type of foods these values are derived from
- Conduct training for members and staff on how to locally process complimentary nutritious foods.
- Train the members on how the processed foods can be preserved and packaged locally.4
B. Community Outreach (approx. 10% of the time)
- Support in planning community outreaches to education on complimentary feeding
- With support of the organization staff, members and volunteers, sensitize the care takers of children and pregnant mothers to understand the importance of complimentary feeding.
- Support the organization to develop a simple strategy for marketing the processed nutritious foods.
C. Administrative Support (no more than 10% of the time)
- All internships involve providing ongoing support to host organizational initiatives, including but not limited to assisting with program documentation, filing, taking meeting minutes, and other routine clerical functions. As an intern for the organization, it is expected that he/she will provide occasional support of this type as needed, along with other duties and activities identified by the direct supervisor.
Expected outcomes
- Rwenzori organization for children living under difficult circumstances (ROCLDC) members will be equipped with skills in processing nutritious complimentary foods for children and pregnant mothers
- The members will have a clear understanding of the nutritious foods that are locally available and which foods can be mixed with others.
Supervision and Guidance
- The NAI functions under the direct supervision of the ED. The NAI is expected to carry out most job functions independently with guidance and support of the staff and volunteers.
Desired Qualifications
- Education: Pursuing or achieved a university degree in Nutrition
- Prior Experience: previous experience working or volunteering in rural communities.
- Language Proficiency: Spoken and written fluency in English.
- Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and the host-country’s culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level relationship with NGO officials and host families, demonstrated experience and skills in supporting of training or educational events and knowledge of fair trade certification process.
- Skills and Abilities: Ability to effectively work and integrate with rural communities, organizational and administrative skills, excellent computer skills in word-processing. Motivation and commitment to work effectively as part of an inter-cultural team, excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment.
Other
- It is suggested that the intern bring his/her own laptop as ROCLDC will not be able to provide the intern with a computer.
- The intern will work for approximately 6 hours per day Monday – Friday. Where the intern is needed to work for extra hours to achieve expected target, the ED will have a prior discussion with the intern.
- Transport means is a challenge for the organization so the intern may have to walk from the host family home to the office and will use public transport to go to communities.
