Physical Therapy Advisor & Trainer Intern

The Physical Therapy Advsior and Trainer position under the supervision of the Executive Director of Give a Give and the Clinic, will provide comprehensive and strategic support to the partner organization in establishing a physical therapy training and micro facility. The basic responsibilities of the position generally include developing and supporting the capacity building of the clinic and it’s Physical therapy center. Additionally, the intern will train the Clinic staff, board members and the volunteers about basics of physical therapy and healing movements and muscle strengthening.
In general, the PT Advisor and trainer position is structured so that the intern provides guidance with implementing a strategic plan and training for staff and beneficiaries who are healing from post fractures with muscle atrophy. Unlike similar internships, this work
focuses on providing a high level of intensive support to a group of professional development workers and less on the cultural, language and community immersion components associated with many “voluntourism” internships. This internship is intended to mirror the expectations and responsibilities of an entry level development position. The position works under the supervision of the partner organization Director. The intern will function under the direct supervision of the GAG Clinic indirect oversight and supervision from the Ministry of Health and FCDE Program Director.
Give a Goat Africa (GAG) has many project programs under the one umbrella of its first income generation project of goat giving and rearing. The GAG property is vast with a health clinic on its compound as well as a school, and agro tourism hostel on the campus.
Since 2011, GAG has been operating a community based health center in Rwesororo village in Kisinga Sub County. The health facility provides both in and out patient and treatment and laboratory community health education to children adults and the general community in over 4000 households in the 4 sub-counties of Kisinga, Munkunyu, Kyondo and Kyarumba. Vision: To provide services in health and income generation to lift people from poverty. Goal: To improve the quality of life for the youth in Kasese district and its surrounding area. Through raising awareness and preventing the spread of the STDs and AIDS/HIV diseases through intervention measures youth and thrive in their communities. Improving the sexual and reproductive health for the beneficiaries by 2018 is YAPI’s
goal.

The intern will be living with a host family in the community and is expected to be considerate of cultural differences. The intern will be living in a homestay but will have their own room, they will be expected to share bathrooms and living space with their families, they will be expected to respect their host family rules, etc.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create training guidelines on physical therapy practice for patients.
- Assist in raising awareness and education community on benefits of physical therapy.
- Creating informative communications materials to help educate Clinic staff through demonstrations on physical therapy techniques
- Assist in creating guidelines for typical treatments of three common muscular ailments and the techniques used to treat them
- Training staff on data management for physical therapy patients in order to manage and gauge progress
- Training staff in practices that are helpful rather than harmful and teaching differences
Desired Qualifications:
- Education: Pursuing a university degree in a physical therapy or recently graduated from university
- Knowledge: Vested interest in Physical Therapy as a career and health related programs. Critical thinker and quick learner, able to work despite resource limitations and challenges
- Skills and Abilities: Flexible and adaptable, able to cope with lack of power, running water, or internet from time-to-time. Some background in working with non-profits previous Physical Therapy facilities would be helpful but is not required. This is a non-clinical position therefore experience training staff is required
