Social Media Support Intern

The Social Media Support Intern (SMSI), under the direct supervision of Foundation for Community Development and Empowerment's (FCDE) Program Director will provide strategic support to 4-7 local partner organizations (LPO) to develop strategies and guidance for use of online media (websites, blogs, Facebook) to increase communication of all organization-related information highlighting LPO essential information, programmatic activities, and successes to increase LPO ability to disseminate information and acquire funding. By providing technical training, the SMSI will become a partner and catalyst in making long-term positive changes for organizations that are the driving forces behind sustainable local development in small business development, women’s empowerment, social justice, health, HIV/AIDS, youth & education and the environment.
The SMSI intern will spend the majority of the time in-office at FCDE and LPO offices in and around Kasese Town, with occasional visits to the field. Typical work schedule for this position is Monday – Friday from 8:00am-5pm, with occasional site visits conducted over the weekend. FCDE’s office has 6 laptops as part of the resource center with Internet access.

Expected Outcomes:
Supervision and Guidance
The IMOM intern functions under the direct supervision of the FCDE Program Director and in coordination and cooperation with the local FCDE Program Team. The IMOM intern is expected to carry out most job function independently and take a significant role in initiating the processes necessary to complete the tasks. In addition to the direct supervisor, the IMOM intern will be assigned a counterpart whom will serve as an additional point of resource and reference.
Desired Qualifications

Major Duties and Responsibilities
A. Online Media Training (approx. 40% of the time)
- Build staff and volunteers capacity on using digital and video cameras, including the storing, processing and utilizing of its digital files. Documentation will be used to to share LPO’s work with financial sponsors and interested parties.
- Educate LPO staff in importance of online and social media to enhance their programmatic support locally in Uganda and internationally.
- Train LPO staff in updating (and upgrading, if possible) organization’s website to increase organizational visibility, and information dissemination.
- Identify other areas of support needed in information and communication technology capacity-building and with guidance from the supervisor, design and conduct capactiy-building sessions or provide additional one-on-one support.
- Design a training curriculum and strategy to ensure adequate documentation of new skills learned and to ensure future internal skills transfer capabilities.
B. Online and Social Media Development (approx. 40% of the time)
- In collaboration with LPO staff, carry out an online media needs assessment to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.
- Guide LPO staff in creation of blog, website, or other online or social media page (if not already in place) to provide general organizational information, program information, success stories, and FAQ to be shared with potential donors.
C. Administrative Support (no more than 20% of the time)
- All internships involve providing ongoing support to various organizational initiatives, including but not limited to assisting with program documentation, filing, taking meeting minutes, and other routine clerical functions. As an intern for the organization, it is expected that you will provide occasional support of this type as needed, along with other duties and activities identified by your direct supervisor.
Expected Outcomes:
- LPOs will have at least one updated and current online media site; key staff will have sense of ownership of sites and be able to update them as needed.
- Key LPO staff will have received at least 4 hours of online media training.

Desired Qualifications
- Education: Pursuing or achieved a university degree in International Development, Multimedia, Communications, or related field.
- Prior Experience: Previous experience working, volunteering or traveling abroad, especially in the Global South and/or with rural communities, in addition to comparable experience or education within a related field.
- Language Proficiency: Spoken and written fluency in English.
- Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of community development and the host-country’s culture/history/current events; demonstrated ability to maintain working level contacts with NGO officials and host families; demonstrated experience and skills in supporting of training or educational events; and demonstrated experience and skills in fundraising and resource mobilization.
- Skills and Abilities: Basic social media and website knowledge and skills, media technology (sound and visual), and organizational development skills. Ability to take initiative, work under minimal guidance, and in both office and field settings. Organizational and administrative skills. Excellent computer skills in word-processing and database management. Motivation and commitment to work effectively as part of an inter-cultural team. Excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment under normal as well as complex and often stressful conditions.
