Program Focus: Isla seeks interns who are passionate about engineering, sustainable development, and infrastructure innovation. Interns should be eager to contribute to impactful projects in environmental engineering, urban planning, and water resource management while gaining hands-on experience with local NGOs and the University of Prishtina’s School of Engineering.

 

Task Focus: Infrastructure research & development, Environmental engineering & sustainability, Policy & technical documentation, Project implementation & engineering design, Event coordination & public outreach, Independent projects are welcome.

 

Program Length: 9+ Weeks

Program Overview

Intern with engineering initiatives focused on sustainable infrastructure, environmental conservation, and resource management in Kosovo in the Western Balkans.

Prishtina, the capital of Kosovo, offers a dynamic environment for engineering students to gain hands-on experience through internships with local NGOs and the University of Prishtina’s School of Engineering. These internships provide students with access to state-of-the-art facilities, expert mentorship, and direct engagement in impactful engineering projects.


Despite the growing demand for engineering solutions in Kosovo, many organizations and institutions face resource limitations, creating a need for skilled interns to support various projects in engineering, research, and community engagement. Stretching across diverse fields such as:

 

  1. Construction engineering

  2. Hydraulic engineering 

  3. Integrated water resource management

  4. Environmental engineering and sustainability

  5. Energy and environmental sustainability

  6. Energy auditing


These internships offer a crucial opportunity to develop professional skills while contributing to meaningful initiatives.


Interns will play an active role in addressing urgent challenges while gaining hands-on experience in sustainable development. Tasks Included

Interns will be assigned to one or more of the following projects in Prishtina, Kosovo, working with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the University of Prishtina’s Faculty of Engineering:

 

  1. Infrastructure research & development Conduct feasibility studies and analyze engineering challenges to support innovative solutions in urban planning, water management, and sustainability.

  2. Environmental engineering & sustainability Assist in GIS mapping, sustainable land use planning, and environmental impact assessments for infrastructure projects.

  3. Policy & technical documentation Contribute to drafting reports, grant proposals, and engineering policy recommendations to advance sustainable development initiatives.

  4. Project implementation & engineering design  Support NGOs in designing, prototyping, and implementing engineering solutions for community and environmental projects.

  5. Event coordination & public outreach Help organize industry-related conferences, community engagement programs, and awareness campaigns promoting engineering and sustainability efforts.

  6. Independent projects are welcome. Self-initiated research or special projects based on personal interests or academic requirements are also encouraged. Interns will have access to engineering faculty, local laboratories, engineering facilities, and professional guidance.

Requirements

Isla seeks interns who are passionate about engineering, sustainable development, and infrastructure innovation. Interns should be eager to contribute to impactful projects in environmental engineering, urban planning, and water resource management while gaining hands-on experience with local NGOs and the University of Prishtina’s School of Engineering.

Skills & Abilities include:

  1. University undergraduate or graduate students, and entry-level  professionals with backgrounds in engineering, environmental science, urban planning, or related fields.

  2. Strong interest in infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, water resource management, and technical research.

  3. Ability to work independently and take initiative in a fast-paced environment, contributing to engineering projects and sustainable development initiatives.

  4. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to apply technical knowledge to real-world challenges.

  5. Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with professionals, NGOs, and academic institutions.

  6. Willingness to engage in project implementation, research, policy documentation, and public outreach efforts supporting Kosovo’s engineering and sustainability initiatives.

What Is Covered

Isla will work closely with your university to assist with academic credit requirements for your internship and in regard to the transfer of credit for participation in classes at the university. The following is included within the program so that you can focus primarily on the work at hand and be supported each step of the way!

 

  1. Pre-departure guide and assistance with preparations (packing list, language modules, cultural guidance, etc)

  2. Quality internship placement with a customized scope of work

  3. Airport pickup and in-country orientation

  4. Welcome lunch/dinner

  5. Housing, internet, and one-time fully-stocked kitchen

  6. Travel, medical, and emergency evacuation insurance

  7. Local SIM card/phone plan (optional)

  8. Monthly passes for daily bus transportation (optional)

  9. Local language classes (optional)

  10. Tuition to study at the national university for 4 ECTS/3 US credits (optional)

  11. Mentorship from local professionals

  12. 24/7 support from Isla team

  13. Bi-weekly internship and cultural experience reflection sessions

  14. Scheduled team lunches/dinners with all interns and the Isla team with relevant professionals and stakeholders

  15. Support in organizing and planning travel/in-country social activities

  16. Cultural and social activities as available 

  17. Certificate of completion and letter of references upon completion of internship

  18. Continued mentorship post completion of internship (according to field of interest)

  19. Additional support depending on country of internship and academic requirements
