Situated in the heart of the Balkans, North Macedonia is a country known for its diverse history, multicultural identity, and growing role in regional cooperation and development. With that, the location provides interns with a unique opportunity to experience a society navigating political reform, cultural preservation, and economic development. Its blend of Ottoman, Byzantine, and modern influences creates a dynamic environment for learning and professional growth.


All placements are based in Skopje, the capital city, where historic neighborhoods meet modern institutions and civic organizations. Interns will find the city easy to navigate, affordable, and welcoming, with access to cultural landmarks, vibrant cafés, and nearby natural attractions.

 

Outside the capital, interns can explore Lake Ohrid, UNESCO World Heritage sites, mountain landscapes, and a strong tradition of hospitality and local cuisine!

Languages Spoken

Macedonian is the official language of North Macedonia. Albanian is also widely spoken, particularly in certain regions. English is commonly spoken among younger generations and in professional and academic settings.

Visas

U.S. citizens may enter North Macedonia without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Passports should be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. Travelers from other countries should check visa requirements with Isla Internships Abroad or the Embassy of North Macedonia in their home country.
