Special Needs Education

Intern with an organization dedicated to promoting positive youth development (PYD) through an inclusive approach. This approach actively engages young people within their communities, schools, peer groups, families, and organizations, fostering productive and constructive interactions. It emphasizes recognizing, utilizing, and enhancing young people's strengths, enabling positive outcomes by providing suitable opportunities and platforms for youth, nurturing positive relationships, and offering the necessary support to develop their inherent abilities and life aspirations.

One of the distinct groups this organization focuses on is schools with special needs. Special Education Needs (SEN) teachers play a crucial role in providing additional support to children with various requirements. These needs encompass physical disabilities, learning challenges, emotional and behavioral difficulties, communication disorders, and conditions such as autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia, ADHD, sensory impairments, sensory processing disorders, and mental health issues. SEN teachers may also engage with gifted children.

We are seeking an intern with relevant experience, motivation, commitment, and a passion for special needs education. The intern will collaborate closely with the organization's team and the management of selected primary schools.

The intern's primary responsibility will involve active engagement with the targeted schools. Under the direct guidance of the Executive Director, the intern will design and execute educational interventions, focusing on capacity building for students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders interested in special needs education. This internship is located in Rukungiri Town, Uganda.

The specific roles and responsibilities of the intern will encompass:

  • Development of learning activity programs

  • Planning, preparation, and research of lessons

  • Adaptation of teaching materials

  • Utilization of special facilities and equipment

  • One-on-one, class, or small group teaching and interaction with students

  • Evaluation of students' work and provision of feedback

  • Encouraging personal development through tutorials and pastoral support

  • Attendance at meetings and reviews

  • Collaboration with parents, external agencies, and various professionals, such as speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, and educational psychologists

  • Report writing

  • Coordination of support staff's work
